It is my personal belief dietitians should have some form of order writing privileges (OWP). After all, we are the food and nutrition experts right? Doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants — as important as their jobs are — do not have as much training as dietitians do when it comes to order a therapeutic diet, order a supplement, and even managing enteral and parenteral nutrition infusions. In today’s video I discuss who is able to have OWP, define the 3 different types of OWP, and examine the responsibility the Dietitian or qualified nutrition professional takes on when they are granted OWP.
